Episode 31 - Ashlee Hoelck

Mending Families is hosted by Melissa Pemberton and she brings you weekly content that is a mix of trauma aware interviews, parenting tips for those caring for kids from adversity, and stories from people just like you as they share their beautiful messy moments. Melissa hopes that when you listen each week, you will feel encouraged, inspired and take a little something away to help you and your family move from broken to mended.

Ashlee Hoelck, her husband and her two boys live in Texas. Ashlee homeschools her boys while also finding time to run her online business in sales and marketing. She is a survivor with heart to give other women the strength and courage she has had to overcome and achieve all that she dreams of. In her free time, Ashlee loves to make clean foods, go to the movies, and hang out at the river!

On today’s episode, Ashlee starts by sharing about homeschooling her two boys before jumping into her story of healing her body from trauma she experienced in an abusive relationship many years ago. She talks about how she discovered that her chronic pain was connected to the abuse she endured and where she sought out healing. Ashlee was so brave to tell her story and I am so thankful that she found our community a safe place to share!

Today we talk about abusive relationships and domestic violence so please know that if you are in a DV situation or know someone who is, there is help. Go to www.thehotline.org or call 1-800-799-7233

Topics Ashlee mentions:

* Ashlee found that Yoga was helpful with handling her chronic back pain but still needed to realize that it was deeper inside of her that needed healing

* She was attending a manifestation course and she was able to use meditation and healing of her inner hurts to finally find healing from her chronic pain

* Hawaiian forgiveness prayer is a strategy she used to help her move towards healing as well

*The Body Keeps the Score was another part of her healing journey that gave her more understanding behind her healing

* EFT (tapping) is a tool that Ashlee now uses to help others heal and explains how it works. She has journals that can help with this and can be found at her Etsy shop

*We talk briefly about spanking and how she came to the realization that spanking was so similar to being in an abusive relationship. She describes the decision to not spank as “detoxing” and explains how it has been for her.

* Domestic Violence awareness is important, especially learning how to be more supportive of those you think might be in a DV situation. Find more information at https://ncadv.org/

*Two books that Ashlee recommends are Waking the Tiger by Peter Levine and Whole Again by Jackson MacKenzie
